The Start Of My Weaving Journey
Nov 18, 2025 | By: Diane K Costello
Am I over reading something into this? I have been wondering why weaving? I have been loving the whole quilting process and prior to that knitting. Knitting is my winter sport (lol). Why weaving? Why now?
I am a creator, a maker, an artist. I do not like being told that I have to do something a specific way. I want to learn all the ways, so that I can do it the way that feels best to me. So, down the rabbit hole I wandered. Deeper and deeper... There are a lot of different ways of doing things - A LOT! so, after hours of watching different people, some brand new to the art and others who have been doing it for decades, I have found a a few comfortable steps in my process and my journey continues.
I bought my first rigid heddle weaving loom early June 2025. Then in September I purchased an Ashford 32" 8-shaft table loom. I wanted to create more patterns in my weaving and was not getting what I was hoping from my Rigid Heddle. With those two looms, I have woven at least 40 hand towels and I absolutely love it! I want to weave more fabrics. Twill, diamonds, zig-zags, more intricate designs. A mohair or wool blanket using the double weave method. Cotton bath towels. I really do love the weaving process.
Here I am past the half way mark of my life and I am picking up the core, the foundation of the fiber arts. I have been knitting since I was a child. I never really paid much attention to all of the who, what, when, where and how of the fibers I loved to use. Primarily wool or cotton. Yes, call me a fiber snob and I will gladly answer yes...yes I am, but I really knew nothing about them. I actually just found out this past year that Mohair comes from Goats not Sheep. Funny how that works. Weaving is moving me toward understanding fiber, mainly wool and cotton. Let's just see where this takes me.
